What is your full name, and where are you based?
My name is Luis Bonilla, owner of Phantom Tattoo in Cartago, Costa Rica.
How did you start your journey as a tattoo artist?
I’ve been tattooing for around 27 years. It started by chance—I’ve always loved drawing and wanted to be a comic book artist. Some friends asked me to tattoo them, and once I did, I fell in love with tattooing.
The Tattoo Style of Luis Bonilla Tattoo Artist
How would you describe your tattoo style?
I’d say it’s illustrative, influenced by the new school, oriental art, and realism. My style is always evolving. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques and exploring different forms of visual language.
Which techniques do you most enjoy using?
I like combining bold outlines with finer internal lines, sometimes removing internal lines altogether to achieve a more painterly, clean effect.
Artistic Influences Behind Luis Bonilla Tattoo Artist’s Work
What inspires your tattoo designs?
Lately, I’ve been inspired by nature—animals, insects, and plants. Living in Costa Rica offers a lot of natural beauty. I also get inspiration from graffiti artists, sculptors, and musicians. I believe inspiration can come from anywhere.
How has your tattoo style changed over the years?
I began with black & gray tattoos heavily influenced by Paul Booth and Bob Tyrrell. Today, I work more with color and draw inspiration from oriental folklore and the new school style.

What sets your work apart from other tattoo artists?
I try to blend different styles in a harmonious way. I embrace new trends and always aim to personalize each tattoo based on the client’s vision. Every tattoo becomes a small creative collaboration between the client and me.
Are there specific designs you enjoy most?
I love a challenge—especially bold ideas from clients. I also enjoy oriental tattoos and have developed a more personal version of that style. Lately, I’ve been focusing on large-scale gray designs. Geometric styles aren’t my strength, though!
